今村夏子さんの作品は、奥が深く結末が理解しにくいという方も多いと思います。
どんなに面白い話でも結末が理解できなかったら、スッキリしませんよね。

林ちひろは中学3年生。
幼い頃から病弱だったちひろを愛する両親は、いつからか、怪しい宗教にのめり込むように。
その延長で、高額の水にも手を出してしまう。
宗教を信仰することで、家族はどんどんおかしく、壊れていく。
初めは両親を信じて疑わなかったちひろだが、周囲の反応と学校での出来事で自分の生活の違和感に気づいていく。
もう逃げることができなくなった両親とちひろは、どうなってしまうのか。

解説
この作品は、ラストに家族三人で星空を眺め続けるシーンで幕を閉じます。
そのシーンにはどのような意味が込められているのか私なりに考えてみました。
その結果、『家族三人で心中した』という結末がしっくりきました。（※あくまで私の考えです。）
その根拠となる部分は、両親がちひろを夜空を見に誘う場面に見られます。
真冬で気温は相当低いはず、なのに、もう帰りたいというちひろを無理に誘う両親の姿に疑問を持ちました。
きっと、両親も宗教の怪しさに気がついていたんだと考えています。
初めはちひろを助けたいという一心で、行動してきた二人。
いつの間にか自分達だけが、のめり込んで抜け出せない状況になっていることに気づいた時、もう後戻りはできなくなっていたのだと思います。
実際に、自分が一つの宗教を信仰していると想像してみてください。
大切な教えを長年自分に取り入れてきた。
そんなものを今になって手放せるでしょうか。
手放した先の不安もあるでしょうし、何より裏切ってしまったという罪悪感に蝕まれてしまうような気がします。
そして、心中することがちひろを助けることにつながるのだということも考えたのかもしれません。
そのため、二人は愛する娘と共に死を選んだのかと、私は考えています。
感想（ネタバレを含む）
今村夏子さんの作品は、奥が深く、私は最後まで読み解くことができませんでした。
今、疑問に思っている点としては宗教団体の合宿日の出来事です。
館内で、両親とちひろは離れ離れになってしまいます。
互いに互いを探しているのですが、すれ違ってしまってなかなか会うことができなかったのです。
その場面にも、何か意味があるんだろうと感じています。

今回、原作版と映画版の両方を観ましたが大きく設定が変わっている点は、特になかったと思います。
今村夏子さんの独特な雰囲気が映画にも溢れていて、とても充実した映画だったと感じています。
主演の芦田愛菜さんの演技も、ちひろの感情の不安定さを繊細に表現していて素晴らしかったです。
まだ映画を見ていない方、もしくは原作を読んでいない方は、どちらも味わってみてはいかかでしょうか。
